Weight-Loss App Uses Tough Love to Get You Fit
Feed-twFeed-fb

Working out has never been so sadistic.

Carrot Fit is a new app that will reward you if you meet your weight-loss goals, but seriously chew you out if you slip up

The brainchild of iOS developer Grailr, Carrot Fit knows more than 2,000 phrases — some kind and some cruel — thanks to iOS 7's new text-to-speech capabilities. Users enter their current weight when they download the app, and are given rewards such as workout tips and cat facts if they shed pounds. If users gain weight back, however, the app gives them a tongue-lashing

"Meatbags," as the app refers to users, can set reminders to avoid missing a weigh-in, share their progress with friends and check their body mass index, among other features. Future updates of Carrot Fit will include features such as a six-minute workout and the ominous-sounding Deathmarch 5K, according to the product's description in the iTunes store. Read more...

Seventeen-year-old Lorde, best known for her breakout viral hit "Royals," unexpectedly dropped a new single on iTunes titled "No Better." The song arrived Friday, just hours after Beyoncé surprised everyone with a secret album featuring 14 songs and 17 videos

It's been a big year for the electro pop singer-songwriter from New Zealand. Most recently, Lorde earned four nominations for next year's Grammy Awards on the strength of "Royals" and debut album Pure Heroine. To boot, her music video for "Team" crashed Vevo.

Her Twitter and Facebook accounts offer no explanation about the release, both places she routinely turns to as a way to fill fans in about her music. But it's not a bad way to end a breakout year, right? Read more...

Spotify May Kill Pandora and iTunes, but Not Just Yet
Feed-twFeed-fb

Spotify may eventually make your iTunes and Pandora accounts obsolete, but don’t delete them just yet

Spotify's introduction of free streaming on-demand music to mobile devices, announced Wednesday, will not cause an overnight collapse of the major online music players, and may provide a short-term boost for services that still sell music. The more serious questions surround the long-term implications for a music industry already grappling with change.

Music lovers still buy musicSales of music on iTunes have not only weathered the storm of online music streaming, but benefitted from it. Even with the growth of streaming music, per-buyer spending on downloads rose 6% in 2012, according to NPD Group, market advisory service that tracks sales. Read more...

iTunes Accepts Donations for Typhoon Haiyan Relief
Feed-twFeed-fb

The iTunes store now lets customers donate $5 to $200 to victims of Typhoon Haiyan via the American Red Cross. The storm smashed into the Philippines over the weekend of Nov. 9, leaving at least 1,774 dead, 2,487 injured and 660,000 displaced, according to CNN

All contributions will be sent to the American Red Cross to "provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to victims," the donation page reads, and iTunes won't share user information with the relief agency. The site also notes that, if the amount donated exceeds what is needed to assist people affected by the typhoon, the Red Cross will use the money to help victims of other disasters. Read more...

Lady Gaga Releases 'ARTPOP' Album Companion App
Feed-twFeed-fb

"ARTPOP" by Lady Gaga “could mean anything,” as sung in the title track on the album. With the release of Lady Gaga’s third studio album “ARTPOP,” Gaga and her TechHaus team have built an intriguing companion app. The main question is whether the ARTPOP app is more than a gimmicky way to boost album sales.

The "ARTPOP" app is centralized around the idea of “the auras,” which is the community of users within the app. Named after “Aura,” the first track on the album, each user has a personal profile that they develop while using the app. Think of it as an overall presence of your activity, accessed by tapping on the glowing orb at the bottom of the main menu, which will reveal your activity scattered across the screen. Discovery Problem: Why It's So Hard to Find New Podcasts
Feed-twFeed-fb

Postcasts have a serious discovery problem.

As a medium, it's hot right now. It’s building loyal and potentially lucrative communities around niche topics. Independent producers are finding success, fame and even a little money. But as a technology and an industry, podcasting has failed at connecting people with content in a dynamic and efficient way. There’s no Spotify for podcasting.

When it comes to podcasts, people are just lost. They don’t know where to start

Late this summer, a party-crashing podcast appeared. After about a year of modest growth, Welcome to Night Vale suddenly unseated This American Life from the No. 1 spot in iTunes’ Top 10 List. For a virtual unknown like Night Vale, this is a huge accomplishment Read more...

'Shadow' App Helps You Track Your Dreams
Feed-twFeed-fb

You probably don’t remember what you dreamed about last night.

A new app called Shadow is attempting to change that, offering an easy way for you to record your dreams, track them, and discover what they might all mean.

According to Shadow, 95% of dreams are forgotten if they’re not recorded shortly after waking up. It aims to combat that by working first as an alarm clock that gently wakes you up through escalating alarms, transitioning you smoothly from sleeping to being awake

Once you wake up, the app instantly has you type or speak answers to questions about your dreams, recording those memories while they’re still fresh in your mind. The longer you use the app, the more information you’ll be able to record, and the better your chances will be to discover patterns within those dreams. Read more...
