Hulu Answers Our Dreams of a '7th Heaven' Revival

7th Heaven, television's longest-running family drama, called it quits in 2007, but now Hulu wants you to relive the series in all its glory — all 243 episodes of it.

Hulu will make the show's 11 seasons available to Hulu Plus subscribers sometime this year as part of a non-exclusive multi-year content deal with CBS Corporation that will expand Hulu's collection of CBS programming from 2,700 episodes to more than 5,300 episodes.

The agreement, which was announced Monday, will bring a slew of newer and older shows to Hulu Plus in 2014. Hulu Plus subscribers will get multiple seasons of Cheers, Happy Days, Taxi, The Odd Couple, Everybody Loves Raymond, Laverne & Shirley, Wings and Melrose Place, as well as the first season of 90210. No exact release dates have been set for any shows. Read more...

Stop Encouraging Binge Watching

Prepare yourselves: Netflix will release House of Cards Season 2 on Valentine's Day. For fans of the first season, this means a sense of excitement mingled with foreboding — because of course, Netflix will release all 13 hour-long episodes at once. Subscribers will have to make a decision soon: do they blow the whole weekend of Feb. 15 to 16 on the show, or do they risk the slings and arrows of outrageous spoilers?

It's surprising how fast we have entered into a world where binge viewing of an entire season is not only the norm, it is encouraged. It's encouraged by Netflix and Hulu Plus, both of which offer versions of their apps (on the web, on the iPad and on Roku, at least) that auto-play the next episode as soon as you get to the credits for the last one. (Netflix calls the feature Post Play.) Read more...

Hulu has kicked off the run up to the advertising bonanza known as the Super Bowl with its launch of AdZone.

Now in its fourth year, AdZone hosts a wide variety of advertisements from past Super Bowls in the run up to the game on Feb. 2, along with a few previews of ads that will be shown during this year's game.

The channel includes numerous iconic Super Bowl ads such as Apple's "1984" and Reebok's "Terry Tate: Office Linebacker."

On gameday, viewers can visit AdZone, embedded below, to see commercials that have run and vote for their favorites. Last year, voters selected "Farmer" by Ram Trucks as their favorite. YouTube runs a similar competition - AdBiltz, in which viewers also selected the Ram ad Read more...

If You Understand Bridgegate, You Get Net Neutrality

Ever since the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit stuck down the Federal Communication Commission’s Net Neutrality rules, I can’t stop thinking about how much this reminds me of Governor Chris Christie's New Jersey Bridge Scandal

That mess is proof about how one relatively small body’s actions can make a world of difference on the steady flow of people through one of the nation’s busiest thoroughfares. The Internet has often been referred to as a many-laned highway (or super highway). There are no cars, just billions and billions of bits. They cruise along this digital highway largely unfettered, just as, when things are going very smoothly, thousands of cars can make it to and through the Washington Bridge tolls without much trouble or incident Read more...

Netflix Is the Breakthrough Brand of 2013

Two years ago, Netflix was all but written off for dead.

Netflix decided to split its DVD rentals and online streaming offerings in July 2011, effectively hiking the price by 60% for those accustomed to getting both. Two months later, Netflix doubled down on unpopular moves by announcing plans to split its DVD-by-mail service into a separate business that would be called Qwikster.

Customers took to social media to protest. The stock lost two-thirds of its value in a three-month period. Reed Hastings, the company's CEO, was declared the worst chief executive of the year by the New York Times and TheStreet Read more...

Hulu Expects to Hit $1 Billion in Revenue for First Time

Hulu is projected to hit the $1 billion revenue mark in 2013, a first for the company, CEO Mike Hopkins wrote in a blog post on Wednesday

The company relies on a mix of advertising and subscribers for its income, both of which have continued to climb, according to Hulu. The company broke through 5 million paid subscriptions earlier in 2013 and now counts more than 1,000 advertisers on its site

To put these numbers in perspective, Netflix revenue for the third quarter alone came in at $1.1 billion, although its streaming service does not offer any free content or show ads. While smaller than Netflix, Hulu's revenue is growing at a fast pace: The company's revenue in 2012 was $695 million, meaning revenue increased by 44% year-over-year. Read more...

Hulu's 'The Wrong Mans' Is So Right

The Wrong Mans, Hulu's latest original series, switches from espionage drama to workplace comedy to art heist to buddy cop adventure and back again — all within six episodes. The show, a co-production with the BBC, is also very British. That's either a pro or a con, depending on your affinity for dry, awkward comedy (and accents)

Most importantly, though, The Wrong Mans is good.

When Sam, a town council planning adviser, faints after witnessing a car crash on the way to work, he wakes up with a stranger's cell phone and subsequently becomes embroiled in the ultimate case of mistaken identity — or, rather, cases — as he and his underachieving coworker Phil stumble their way into a hostage negotiation, a kidnapping, a government conspiracy and more horrible situations in the countryside. The Hire That Could Save or Destroy a Crumbling Hulu

"We are passionate in our opinion that the world has long since exceeded its quota in the mediocrity department. We believe our professional calling is to deliver quality... For Hulu, nothing less than brain-spray awesome quality will do, down to the finest detail."

And so begins Hulu’s genesis document, “What Defines Hulu,” a corporate manifesto of sorts from original CEO, Jason Kilar. To read it now is to look into the dreaminess of a startup adventure so earnest it breaks your heart and such a clear picture of the kind of dog-years toll a digital media company experiences in just six years. 'The Awesomes' is Hulu's Misdirection in the Right Direction

Somewhere in the muck and mire of a summer filled with feature flops and aggressive ploys for web-first content, Hulu retreated from the sales table to tout a batch of original shows.

Taking a page out of Netflix's book of original programming, Hulu hasn't wasted any time tapping into a strategy that has proven to be fruitful (in terms of attracting eyeballs) and has thus far revolutionized appointment viewing, watercooler discourse and awards season voting. The subscription service in January offered a preview of its upcoming slate, teasing titles such as The Wrong Mans, about a criminal conspiracy mix-up; Behind the Mask, about the world of sports mascots; and Quick Draw, a comedy western. Hulu Plus Gets a Facelift on Wii, Roku and Samsung TVs

Hulu has rolled out a new interface for Hulu Plus on Roku, select Samsung TV and Blu-ray players and the Nintendo Wii.

The update mirrors changes made to the PlayStation 3 Hulu Plus interface last fall and this spring's Apple TV redesign.

The update is more living room-centric, with a focus on larger artwork, an easier way to scroll through recommendations and improved search. It also brings the Hulu Kids section into the living room.

Roku users should get the update now, as should 2012 and 2013 Samsung TV and Blu-ray owners. The update will hit the Wii soon.

At least five companies are reportedly bidding on Hulu — including Yahoo. While Hulu's top traffic draw is its free website, the more than 3 million paying Hulu Plus subscribers are the key to the company's future. Read more...
