How to Nail Your Viral Video Wedding Proposal

In the hierarchy of viral videos, marriage proposals are a sweet, mushy breed unto themselves. Successful viral videos — the ones that reach a million hits on YouTube and bring your workday to a grinding halt — have to surprise the viewer and tug at her heartstrings. Spontaneity and sap: proposals have 'em in spades.

In a blog post, Karen X. Chang of "Girl Learns to Dance in a Year" fame shared her strategy for viral stardom. As it turns out, her video's success was no happy accident: Going viral requires strategy and planning, and a dash of elbow grease Read more...

Soup.io will be discontinued :(

Dear soup.io fans and users,
today, we have to share very sad news. Soup.io will stop working in less than 10 days. :(
It's breaking our heart and we honestly tried whatever we could to keep the platform up and running. But the high costs and low revenue streams made it impossible to continue with it. We invested a lot of personal time and money to operate the platform, but when it's over, it's over.
We are really sorry. Soup.io is part of the internet history and online for one and a half decades.
Here are the hard facts:
- In 10 days the platform will stop working.
- Backup your data in this time
- We will not keep backups nor can we recover your data
July, 20th, 2020 is the due date.
Please, share your thoughts and feelings here.

How to Watch and Follow the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony

Considering that NBC will live stream every second of competition during the Sochi Winter Olympics to those with a pay-TV subscription, it came as a bit of a surprise when the network announced in early January that it will delay airing the opening ceremony for eight and a half hours.

NBC Universal executives explained that streaming the grandiose ceremony so early in the day (U.S. viewers on the East Coast would have seen it at 11 a.m.) would be both confusing and underwhelming.

Of course, this poses a problem for Twitter users, as viewers in other countries without restrictions will spoil the event. U.S. viewers hoping to watch BBC or CBC coverage are also out of luck, as those stations are required to restrict streaming access to U.S. viewers due to broadcast rights. Read more...

13 Creative Uses for Jelly, the Hot New Q&A App

For those confused, this is not an article about grape spreadJelly, the new questions and answers app helmed by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, is still, for the most part, a fringe app for the social media-obsessed.

Less than a month old, the most practical uses of the app are still being discovered and fleshed out every day. After spending a few weeks with it, we've gathered a handful of what we think are particularly creative jellies.

At this point, users seem to have differing opinions on which type of questions should be asked on the app. For every reasonable translation prompt, it seems, there are five questions with easily searchable answers. "How can I remove stains?" and other basic questions that Google can answer faster don't particularly seem to be the type of query Jelly is meant for. Read more...

The Instagram Direct Primer: Everything You Need to Know

At a "mystery press event" in New York City on Thursday, Instagram unveiled Instagram Direct, a new way for users to send photos to private groups or individuals.

No, Instagram isn't becoming Snapchat (at least, not yet), but the service and social network is more deeply embracing user-to-user communication. "Photos, when they are transmitted, become communication," Instagram cofounder and CEO Kevin Systrom said at the event. That communication gets more sophisticated with Instagram Direct.

Instagram Direct is now available for iOS and Android, and we've spent some time using the new features and figuring out some of its nuances, especially when it comes to sending messages to users you don't follow or don't follow you. Below, we break down what the service is useful for and how it works Read more...

Spotify on Wednesday expanded the free tier of its service to all devices, including smartphones and tablets

In the past, free Spotify users could only access Spotify Radio on mobile devices and tablets, but like other radio services, this prevented them from listening to a specific artist or music in their own playlists. Spotify created the following chart, which shows the access options that users have: Read more...

How to Be Passive Aggressive on Twitter

Oh, how nice of you to finally get around to reading this article. We were beginning to worry

If you've spent much time on Twitter, you'll have likely noticed a bit of passive aggression coming from the site's 232 million monthly active users. Like celebrity snark and the excessive use of hashtags, passive aggressiveness has become a hallmark of the dark side of Twitter, filling your timeline with vaguely pointed sarcasm.

The immature, non-confrontational behavior is so prevalent it's earned an unofficial moniker: "subtweeting." Think of subtweets as Twitter gossip, veiled insults seemingly directed at no one in particular, though very clearly referencing a specific person or event. Lest you think it's a phenomenon limited to Twitter's youngest users, think again. Not even celebrities are above the act, as evidenced by one well-known exchange between Kobe Bryant and Mark Cuban. The Complete Guide to Tumblr Subcultures

On Tumblr, users can post a huge variety of content and media. So, it's no surprise the social blogging platform hosts wildly diverse communities. They take over tags, earn thousands of reblogs and even create dedicated blogs entirely dedicated to one, very specific subject.

Most Tumblr users partake in one or several different subcultures, depending on their personal interests. Because Tumblr allows users to create multiple blogs, a single account can have various subculture-related blogs, as well as a personal one Read more...

How to Spot a Twitter Spambot

Twitter has spam issue. The social network's "follow anyone" model allows a steady influx of spammers to reach out to many people in a short amount of time, hoping at least one of them will click on a sketchy link.

While a recent glitch preventing users from sending links in direct messages may have been Twitter's latest defense against spam, there's no doubt that it remains a major problem for the platform.

The best way to avoid spam is to follow only people who you know and profiles that have been verified — but we know that that isn't always plausible, so we've made a handy checklist of ways to spot a spambot before you follow them. Read more...
