Show Us How You Disconnect From Your Hectic Lives

Every day, it seems our lives become more and more crowded by a new app or social networkYouTube, Facebook, Twitter and an ever-growing list of platforms demand that we check them constantly to stay in touch. The technologies that at first felt like a recreational part of our lives sometimes feel like a chore.

Media theorist Douglass Rushkoff addresses this information overload in his book Present Shock: When Everything Happens Now. This month, Mashable's social book club MashableReads selected Present Shock as its non-fiction pick. As we read the book this month, it's made us think about how little time we devote to disconnecting from our busy lives Read more...

Vote for Your Favorite Movie of 2013

At a time when online streaming is more commonplace than ever, 2013 was a great reminder that there's still something to be said for going to see a film in theaters.

Gravity held audiences breathless, shattering box office records along the way, and fans lined up for Hunger Games: Catching Fire with such fervor that it stole the Thanksgiving weekend box office record from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Films such as 12 Years a Slave and Fruitvale Station handled difficult subject matters with grace, and animated hits Despicable Me 2 and Frozen provided laughter and delight for audiences of all ages. World Cup 2014 Draw: Who Will Advance?

The World Cup draw is officially set.

Earlier today, the 32 teams who will travel to Brazil in July to compete in the 2014 World Cup were split into eight groups of four teams each. The teams will start the tournament by playing each team in their respective group once, and the top two teams from each group advance to the Round of 16, when single-elimination play begins.

There has been plenty of buzz in the world football community surrounding the group draw, as the initial grouping can often play a pivotal role in determining who advances in the tournament. Each country's fans dread being placed in a "group of death," a term used to describe a group with three of more of the world's strongest teams heading into the tournament Read more...

Share Your Best and Worst Blockbuster Memories

With instant streaming services like Netflix on the rise, it's easy to forget that many of us began our home movie-watching careers by going to rental stores like Blockbuster and taking home a physical DVD or, even more unthinkable, a VHS.

However, with the announcement that Blockbuster is closing almost all of its remaining stores in the United States, it seems like the days of an old-fashioned movie night are a thing of the past. Blockbuster will now embrace the "if you can't beat them, join them" mantra and move to a streaming-only model. With that in mind, we want to hear what you'll remember about the former movie rental titan. Read more...

18 Awe-Inspiring Photos of the Sky

The sky is one of the most important elements in landscape photography, whether it's the dominant part of a photograph or just barely showing. When it canopies everything below it, the sky sets the mood.

This week, we asked you to show us your most magical skyscape photos. The 550 submissions we received ranged from beautiful sunrise and sunset shots to photos of monstrous clouds and pastel colors in the sky.

Guest curator Andreas Wonisch, a landscape photographer based in Germany, selected the 18 that are featured below.

"I was pleasantly surprised by the huge number and variety of submissions," he said. "I didn't expect there to be so many different creative takes on this one topic." Read more...

21 Songs to Ease the Pain of Rejection

On this day in 1973, Elmore Smith of the Los Angeles Lakers blocked 17 shots in a game against the Portland Trailblazers, which remains the NBA record for most blocks in a single game.

Basically, the dude was playing out of his mind.

It was clearly not a good day to try for a dunk.

In the vein of Smith's record-setting amount of denial, we have a Music Monday playlist with songs all about getting rejected and the hurt it brings.

When you're told to "Leave (Get Out)" like you're JoJo's ex, you may experience the anger seen in post-breakup anthems "F*ck You" by Cee-Lo Green and "We Are Never Getting Back Together" by Taylor Swift. Once the anger passes, though, you may find yourself "Dreaming With a Broken Heart." Read more...

Shoot a Magical Skyscape for Our Photo Challenge

During a special few hours during the mornings and evenings, the sky glows with intense, magical colors. For this week's round of the Mashable Photo Challenge Guest Series, we want to see your best photos of our extraordinary sky. Guest curator Andreas Wonisch will choose his favorite submissions to feature on Mashable.

"The same sky can look completely different when you are there at different times," Wonisch said. "Usually the golden hour around sunrise and sunset works best for photographing."

Wonisch works as a physicist in Germany specializing in computer simulations. But in his spare time, he shoots landscape and skyscape shots, which are two of his biggest passions. (His photo, above, was taken in Iceland.) Read more...

Capture the Colors of Autumn for Our Photo Challenge

The start of autumn brings out a colorful change in scenery in suburbs and cities alike. For this week's edition of the Mashable Photo Challenge Guest Series, we want to you to capture it all in a photo.

"Photographing autumn is best accomplished by paying attention to the changing foliage and adapting to shorter daylight hours," this week's guest curator, Vivienne Gucwa, said. "Shooting around sunset a little bit before or during golden hours will also give you great results since the sunlight can accentuate and highlight the foliage."

Gucwa is a photographer and writer based in New York City. Her interest in photography sparked about a decade ago Read more...

The End of BlackBerry and Other Top Comments

In light of BlackBerry's acquisition and the debut of iOS 7, it's been another busy week for smartphone news

On Monday, BlackBerry was purchased by Fairfax Financial Holdings for $4.7 billion. For many readers, the only thing more surprising than the acquisition was that the embattled smartphone manufacturer was still worth $4.7 billion. Commentators also took jabs at iOS 7, saying the operating system's new design is too similar to Android.

In other news, University of Toronto professor David Gilmour invoked the wrath of Twitter by refusing to teach books by women in his classes. Many readers were quick to highlight the misogyny of Gilmour’s decision, but others said it was a matter of personal taste. Read more...
