Soup.io will be discontinued :(

Dear soup.io fans and users,
today, we have to share very sad news. Soup.io will stop working in less than 10 days. :(
It's breaking our heart and we honestly tried whatever we could to keep the platform up and running. But the high costs and low revenue streams made it impossible to continue with it. We invested a lot of personal time and money to operate the platform, but when it's over, it's over.
We are really sorry. Soup.io is part of the internet history and online for one and a half decades.
Here are the hard facts:
- In 10 days the platform will stop working.
- Backup your data in this time
- We will not keep backups nor can we recover your data
July, 20th, 2020 is the due date.
Please, share your thoughts and feelings here.
Your Soup.io TEAM

'90s Figure Skating Tumblr Finally Brings LFO to the Olympics

For those of you thinking, "This Olympic figure skating routine would be really killer set to Ace of Base," your '90s dreams have become an alt rock reality.

Comedy writer Mike DiCenzo kicks it old-school with '90s Figure Skating. The da bomb Tumblr features Vine videos of current Olympic pairs figure skaters performing to the 90s' best pop tunes.

Watch Russia's Maxim Trankov tossing Tatiana Volosozhar to 4 Non Blondes and catch Team USA ice dancing duo Meryl Davis and Charlie White twirling to the Spin Doctors. The amazing pairing of Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir with TLC's "Waterfalls" still hasn't happened, but you might think we're moving too fast on that one. Read more...

Tumblr Art Project Gives Everyday People Monster Twins

Monsters under the bed. Monsters in the closet. Throughout our childhoods, we feared the things that went bump in the night. It turns out, monsters weren't there to scare us — they just wanted to be our friends

As Jordan Young's Tumblr, Matching Monsters, reads: "[Monsters are] hiding all over the world, often in places you’d least expect. Sometimes you just need a little help seeing them." The art director turned digital artist has set out to help the world embrace the curious creatures around us through unique drawings he creates from real-life photographs.

Tumblr Belatedly Adds @Mention Alerts, Long After Other Social Sites

Tumblr wants to make sure you know when you're mentioned by friends on the Yahoo-owned blogging service.

For at least four months, users have been able to use the @-sign to autocomplete friends' Tumblr usernames and automatically link to their blogs. The new wrinkle in the feature is that now when you're mentioned, Tumblr notifies you on your Activity page.

The existing @mention feature now results in a Dashboard alert to whomever is mentioned in your post. The existing @mention feature now results in a Dashboard alert to whomever is mentioned in your post.

Previously, Tumblr had three channels of communication that resulted in an alert. You could like posts, reblog posts, or send an "ask" in order for Tumblr to automatically alert a friend on their Dashboard that you're trying to get in touch.

Tumblr staff is rolling the feature out slowly, so not all users will be able to receive alerts just yet. So far, nobody on the ReadWrite team has yet managed to verify the new feature, although CNET News reporter Jenn Van Grove took a screenshot that shows that it's functioning for some users.

It's nothing new that Tumblr is trailing behind in social features; Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn have all had @mention-triggered user alerts for ages. Perhaps this is Yahoo's response to Tumblr's lagging growth earlier this year by adding a feature that has already proven itself elsewhere. Tumblr's addition of this small but useful function will significantly catch it up to competing social networks.

Tumblr Introduces @Mentions for Users

Tumblr announced on Tuesday it is finally adding capabilities for users to directly mention others on the site, a feature that's been long requested by its dedicated fan base.

By typing the "@" symbol and typing the username of who you want to address inside a Tumblr post, a drop down menu will appear. In an email to Mashable, a spokesperson said the mentions will trigger a notification in the recipient' in-stream on the dashboard, as well as on the "activity" page

The company also included the GIF below to announce and demonstrate the feature.

Tumblr Mentions

The move is a part of a greater effort to turn the platform into more of a social network. The @mentions concept is one similarly used by both Facebook and Twitter. Tumblr already uses hashtags on the site too. Read more...

Emoji IRL: The Tumblr Turning Texts Into Art

Designer Liza Nelson has a love-hate relationship with emoji, and she isn't the only one

Across the Internet, you can find people who use the little ideograms almost exclusively to express themselves, for better or for worse. So Nelson decided to create a Tumblr called Emoji IRL.LOL..

"Emojis mean everything and they mean nothing at the same time," Nelson wrote on the site. "They're completely personal and completely universal. They're really quite stupid. And they're the best thing that ever happened to our generation." Read more...

HBO Is Putting First Episodes of 'Girls' Season 3 on YouTube

HBO will upload the first two episodes of Girls season three onto the network's YouTube channel on Jan. 13 at 10 a.m. ET, just 12 hours after they premiere on HBO

Rather than requiring fans to watch live during Sunday's two-part premiere or forcing them to catch up using its HBO GO subscription service, offering the episodes for free on YouTube is one way the network is courting the show's active online fan base.

"For us, this is an increasingly challenging demographic to reach with traditional means," Sabrina Caluori, HBO's vice-president of social media and marketing, told Mashable Read more...

'365 Days of Balloons' Tumblr Is Totally Twisted

Meghan Coleman loves a good challenge. Last September, the graphic designer began her most recent endeavor, 365 Days of Balloons, a Tumblr blog dedicated to creating one colorful twisted object each day for a whole year.

Coleman, who describes herself as a "creative adventurer" on her website, is definitely up to the task. Now on day 106, her balloons have become wildly popular all over the internet. The cute and quirky objects themselves range in size and difficulty — from adorable animals like an owl and a sloth to a fully-harnessed Santa and his nine reindeer. She also loves to make pop culture creations, like Superman and Disney princesses. Read more...

If 'Game of Thrones' Sigils Were Designed By Lisa Frank

Prepare yourselves: Glitter is coming

Westeros is known for being a bleak and chilly place, but just imagine if Lisa Frank — the '90s queen of sparkly school supplies — was a resident of the North

Tumblr user Arterialmotive imagined such a universe by recreating Game of Thrones' house sigils in Frank's colorful style. Dragons have never looked so whimsical.

So Wow. The 20 Best Memes of 2013

Goodbye, Harlem Shake. Goodbye, Hot Dog Legs. As we wave adios to 2013, we must bid farewell to the memes that brought joy to the Internet this year.

This year's crop of memes originated in news stories, YouTube videos and online communities like Reddit and Tumblr

In 2012, major events like the Summer Olympics and U.S. Presidential election spawned inescapable moments that dominated the web for months. In 2013, less meme-able headlines caused most shareable moments to quickly flash and fade.

We gathered a respected jury of sloths, Tumblr fangirls and Shiba Inus to help us settle on the 20 top memes of 2013. Cheers to 2014, Internet! Read more...

Woman Spends a Year Recreating Selfies Taken on Lost iPhone

Danielle Bruckman found the world's most talented selfie snapper after misplacing her iPhone.

Last New Year's Eve, Bruckman's phone went missing. A month later, selfies of a mysterious man with a bitchin' mustache began appearing on her iCloud. Rather than delete the photos, Bruckman began recreating the man's photos with the help of a stick-on mustache and impressive face-twisting skills

My Cloud Pal Selfies 3

"James Franco is not the King of Selfie — as he names himself," Bruckman told Mashable. "I would argue that my cloud pal is the true king."

Bruckman documents her selfie shenanigans — or what she calls "(in)appropriation art" — on a Tumblr page called "My Cloud Pal," which launched last week. She says she waited to upload the photos not for any reason other than procrastination. "I waited until I had a break from work to do it. I wish I had been doing it all along so I'd have 'real-time' updates." Read more...

Say 'I Don't' With 'Bad Engagement Photos' Tumblr

If weddings are celebrations of love and happiness, then engagement photo sessions are celebrations of corniness and overt public displays of affection.

Bad Engagement Photos collects the best of the worst photos from engagement sessions. Think images of couples eskimo-kissing in grimy bathrooms or Photoshop jobs that render the future bride and groom unrecognizable.

The Tumblr pokes good-natured fun at the silliness behind many engagement photos, from their questionable outfit choices and shooting locations to the soft-focus lenses and pet cameos. Read more...

How to Live Blog on Tumblr

The Internet gives us the ability to experience things in real time, so it's no surprise that live blogging has become increasingly popular. Users log onto Tumblr in the middle of big events, fingers ready to type out instant reactions in text posts, sharing their thoughts with the rest of the world.

People often live blog as a way to communicate with others while documenting instant reactions and opinions. Live blogs are also great for catching up on events you missed, or creating commentary for a recorded event. While some users maintain blogs specifically for live blogging certain shows or events, the majority of users simply live blog events from their primary or subculture-specific blogs Read more...

'Star Wars' Joins Tumblr, Posts First Exclusive Pic

Star Wars and social media seem to be a natural fit, judging by the amount of Force-filled references you'll find on Twitter and the franchise's 10 million Likes on Facebook.. When Star Wars joined Instagram earlier this month, it quickly gained more than 200,000 followers

Now, Lucasfilm has brought one of the largest remaining social services to that galaxy far, far away: Tumblr

"Artoo is pleased to announce the launch of our official Tumblr," read the first Star Wars post on Thursday, captioning a GIF of R2-D2 scrolling through various Star Wars memes in holographic form while Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi watch in bafflement. Read more...
