Feed-twFeed-fb

HLN's executive vice president Albie Hecht isn't looking to get millennials to put down their mobile phones and watch his channel. He's counting on them tweeting, blogging and broadcasting to help dictate programming.

"When you see such tremendous talent in the social media space… You see that there’s such energy there that you want to tap into and you also see a growing audience," Hecht told Mashable.

HLN announced on Monday that the channel, best known for its aggressive coverage of high-profile court cases, would undergo a reformatting to become "the first TV network for the social media generation." Read more...

'Walking Dead' Tops Twitter TV Ratings Thanks to a Can of Pudding
Feed-twFeed-fb

AMC's The Walking Dead ended its mid-season hiatus Sunday, and it returned to significant Twitter buzz. Aside from gory zombie deaths, one moment in particular catapulted the show back to the top of Nielsen's weekly Twitter TV Ratings chart.

Survivor Carl Grimes, the angst-filled son of lead protagonist Rick Grimes, once again wandered off alone into an abandoned home, found himself in a scary zombie attack and barely escaped from being bitten. Luckily, he only lost a shoe in the heart-pounding process.

To celebrate his near-death experience, Carl consumed a 112-ounce can of chocolate pudding; that scene helped the show become the top-performing broadcast on Twitter for the week of Feb. 3 to 9. The episode, entitled "After," garnered 1,240,000 total tweets Read more...

To promote season two of action series Banshee, the TV network has created a cohesive Vine series involving the show's characters. Vine users will get an intimate look at the hopes and fears of citizens residing in Banshee, Penn., as opposed to just seeing Vine videos of actors out of character backstage (as other networks have previously done to engage fans of their shows).

'Duck Dynasty' Uproar Intensifies, Along With Confusion About the Show
Feed-twFeed-fb

Duck Dynasty, Duck Dynasty, Duck Dynasty? Ask three times, confused social media users, and then maybe Beetlejuice or someone just as mysterious will tell you everything you've been wondering about A&E's most popular-yet-puzzling show

Last week, "What is Duck Dynasty?" became the new "What is twerking?" after the bearded patriarch of the show, which stars the camouflage-clothed Robertson family of Louisiana, attracted swift criticism for homophobic comments he made in a GQ profile. Phil Robertson told the magazine's Drew Magary:

“It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.” Read more...

The X Factor will wrap its third season in the U.S. this week, and despite a drop in ratings, its finalists are dominating the iTunes charts and racking up significant YouTube views.

“I pray at night for iTunes and YouTube,” X Factor judge and mentor Simon Cowell told Mashable. “It’s a record labels’s dream for songs and video clips to take off online. It's expediting everything we do in the industry."

This is a trend that's been emerging in the reality TV singing competition space, partially thanks to iTunes sales counting as votes for contestants X Factor and The Voice. So though some TV viewers are tuning out, many others are advocating for (or discovering) performers via Twitter and YouTube as well as emptying their digital wallets to buy songs iTunes Read more...

Do you recognize the bittersweet ending of a beloved classic like NBC's 30 Rock, or do you give credit to shows currently hitting their full stride of hilarity, like FOX's New Girl? Do you prefer being able to binge-watch entire seasons of Netflix releases like Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards, or do you crave the suspense that comes from waiting a week for each new episode of such dramas as AMC's Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead?

"What social media has proven is that live TV is stronger than ever ..These one-off events will absolutely continue and social media will be its best friend," Natan Edelsburg, senior vice-president of social tech startup Sawhorse Media and Lost Remote social TV writer, told Mashable. The Great Potential of Topsy, Apple's Newest Purchase
Feed-twFeed-fb

This week, Apple acquired Topsy, a social media analytics company that focuses on tracking Twitter data. The acquisition is interesting, not only because of its purported price (a hefty $200 million), but also for what role it might might play in the Cupertino giant's future plans.

Immediately after the acquisition was confirmed, analysts and pundits started to speculate as to why Apple would acquire Topsy. If this were any other company, the promise of "leveraging big data" and "mining social conversations" for real-time data and "sentiment impact" and other buzzword-laden drivel might be enough. But this is Apple Read more...

Feed-twFeed-fb

Mass Relevance — a company that focuses on creating social experiences for brands, agencies and media companies — has tapped Jesse Redniss for its newly created position of Chief Strategy Officer.

Redniss comes to Mass Relevance from USA Network, where he worked as the senior vice president of digital for the network. At USA, Redniss played an integral role in the network's second screen and social TV integrations, most notably with the Emmy-nominated HashTag Killer social and transmedia integration for the hit show, Psych.

In social TV and second screen circles, Redniss has been known as one of the network suits that "gets" digital and social. His approach to digital and social at USA was unique in that he didn't just tack on digital or social at the end, as part of a marketing campaign removed from the creators and cast members of a show, but instead brought social into the conversation and storytelling process as early as possible, Read more...
