Jay Leno's Emotional 'Tonight Show' Farewell Speech Will Make You Teary

Jay Leno ended his long stint as Tonight Show host on Thursday the same way he began it in May 1992: with Billy Crystal as a guest. But what stood out the most during the celebrity-studded finale episode was Leno's heartfelt goodbye speech

"Boy, this is the hard part," said Leno, fighting back tears. "I want to thank you the audience. You folks have just been incredibly loyal. This is tricky. We wouldn't be on the air. Secondly, this has been the greatest 22 years of my life."

Leno went on to remind viewers that his mother and father both passed away during his first two seasons in the hosting chair, followed by the death of his brother Read more...

NBC Reporter's Story of Getting Hacked in Russia Is BS, Experts Say

An NBC report that claimed visitors to Russia would have their phones and computers hacked almost immediately upon arrival has come under fire from security experts who claim the segment is misleading.

In the report, NBC's Richard Engel claims that visitors are "especially exposed as soon as you try and communicate with anything" and that hackers are "counting on" people to "log on."

The report quickly became a point of skepticism among security specialists. Kyle Wilhoit, the expert involved in the NBC segment, took to Twitter to discuss the piece. He said he will be issuing a "white paper" that will clarify the details of the security flaws that Engel highlighted. Read more...

The Big Bet: NBC Thinks More Digital Coverage Means Better Olympics Ratings

NBC’s last Olympics was either a rousing success or a spectacular failure, depending on who you ask.

The failures, as some called aspects of the coverage, were painstakingly documented in the #NBCFail hashtag that served as a sounding board for complaints about the tape-delayed coverage of the opening ceremony and some of the most anticipated events, in addition to spoiling the Michael Phelps/Ryan Lochte showdown.

The success made a smaller splash on social media but a bigger impact on NBC's bottom line - record setting viewership helped the broadcaster turn an unexpected profit on the Summer games. Read more...

'SNL' Hires First Black Female Cast Member in 7 Years

After holding auditions in December to find a black female to add to the Saturday Night Live cast, NBC producers have hired comedian Sasheer Zamata, an SNL spokesperson confirmed to Mashable on Monday.

Zamata joins this year's lineup after NBC found itself embroiled in a season-long controversy over the lack of diversity on the late night show's cast. Until now, SNL hasn't employed a black female comedian since Maya Rudolph left the show in late 2007.

Zamata, who earned a drama degree from the University of Virginia, stars in sketches on online comedy engines Jest and College Humor as well as on TV in FX's Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell, Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer, MTV's Hey Girl and ABC's Would You Fall For That?. She also has a web show called Pursuit of Sexiness. Read more...

Though criticism and snark ran high on social media for NBC's costly The Sound of Music Live!, the network's three-hour musical-theater spectacle attracted a lofty 18.5 million viewers

Thursday night's ratings have viewers and television-industry professionals wondering whether NBC or other networks can and will try to replicate this live approach with other musicals and entertainment programming, especially in the face of strong competition for viewers from hotshot online-streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon

"What social media has proven is that live TV is stronger than ever ..These one-off events will absolutely continue and social media will be its best friend," Natan Edelsburg, senior vice-president of social tech startup Sawhorse Media and Lost Remote social TV writer, told Mashable. 'Murder, She Wrote' Reboot to Star Octavia Spencer

NBC has agreed to a put pilot commitment on a reboot of Angela Lansbury‘s hugely popular and long-running mystery series Murder, She Wrote. That means that we’re definitely seeing Octavia Spencer in the lead role some time soon.

There’s usually no guarantee that a show will actually air until after a pilot is produced and the network commits to a series. A put pilot, however is a distinctly different animal, and that’s what Deadline is calling Alexandra Cunningham and producer David Janollari‘s new project, starring Oscar winner Octavia Spencer. The “put” part of a put pilot means that the network has agreed to air the pilot, regardless of whether they pick it up for a series or pay some steep fees to the production studio that made it. It means that whatever Cunningham, Janollari and Spencer produce, we’re very very likely to actually see it air. Read more...
