Feed-twFeed-fb

The history of hip hop has never sounded so whimsical.

A Danish group known as The Bottle Boys created a mashup of hip hop's biggest songs — in chronological order — and decided the best instruments for the homage could be found in their fridge.

French YouTube channel It's Big! shared the video of the breathy boys this week. Their medley begins with the genre's roots, covering Kurtis Blow and The Sugarhill Gang, and continue all the way to recent Grammy winner Macklemore

Mashup Blends 25 of 2011′s Hottest Songs [VIDEO]

Each day, Mashable highlights one noteworthy YouTube video. Check out all our viral video picks.

The fifth installment in the annual “United State of Pop” mashup series from Jordan Roseman — a laptop-based DJ better known as DJ Earworm — just popped up on YouTube.

The mashup, “World Go Boom,” combines 25 of the year’s most-successful pop songs from artists such as Adele, Britney Spears, Foster the People, Lady Gaga, LMFAO, Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna.

Roseman used music software Ableton Live to arrange the tracks into one seamless montage. “2011 gave us songs of regret and anger, pride and perseverance, and lots of fire. When someone’s taken everything from you, what do you do? WORLD GO BOOM.” Roseman wrote in a blog post describing the mashup.

The four other “United State of Pop” mashups from 2007 to 2010 have attracted more than 68 million views on YouTube, with the 2009 one, “Blame It on the Pop, going the most viral with 40 million hits.

Listen to “World Go Boom” and DJ Earworm’s mashups from previous years below. Which one is your favorite?

2011: "World Go Boom"

DJ Earworm: "I’ve made some changes in the song selection process this year. In efforts to better reflect the year, I have a system that draws from the weekly charts from throughout 2011 that ensures that all the late-breaking hits (such as 'We Found Love' and 'Sexy and I Know It') are included in the 2011 mix."

Crowdsourced Map Shows Real-World Cellphone Signal Strength

Want to know just how strong your cellphone signal is? It turns out there’s a map and an app for that. OpenSignalMaps uses Android smartphones as probes, crowdsourcing locations of cellular towers and their strength. Finally, you’ll get a real answer to why those calls keep dropping when you pass through certain areas.

Developed by Staircase 3, the company plans to create accurate signal maps with its Android app and OpenSignalMaps website. The company says the beta version of its Android app OpenSignalMaps has been downloaded more than 80,000 times, as you can see by its maps, the crowd of Android users has already contributed millions of signal strength readings.

The app is still in beta, so there’s still a few missing pieces of data. For instance, in our area here in the Midwest, it looks like AT&T towers are considerably underrepresented. Perhaps that’s because AT&T customers use more iPhones and other cellphones than Android smartphones. As the app’s user base expands, so will the validity of its data. Will there be an iPhone version? We asked the OpenSignalMaps developer that question, and will update this post when we get a response.

Take a look at the gallery and you’ll see how OpenSingleMaps, a Google Maps mashup, shows its data two different ways: pinpointing cell towers and then showing a heat map of cell coverage. I’m thinking this is already useful, but the company plans to expand the site to let users compare download speeds on various networks, and track the rollout of Verizon and AT&T’s 4G networks.

OpenSingleMaps could become even more valuable if thousands of additional users download the Android app, voluntarily functioning as data acquisition units for the already large database (the company says it doesn’t retain any of your personal data).

If Staircase 3 could combine its data-driven approach with the user generated cellphone signals of a site such as SignalMap, this could be a comprehensive crowdsourced signal strength measurement device. Finally, we’d have a source of real-world information to counteract the questionable maps we see from wireless providers.

Girl Talk’s Mashups Get Mashed Up

Gregg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) is known for taking popular jams and mashing them together to create one, delicious casserole of sound (or maybe a Mille-feuille, if you have a sweet tooth).

Well, it seems as if in this modern, remake loop of a world, not even mashup artists are free from being mashed. Artist Evan Roth has taken Girl Talk’s Night Ripper and his most recent disc, All Day, and combined them to create this strange aural puree.

Snag the track here.

Mashup Combines This Year’s Top 25 Songs [VIDEO]

DJ Earworm is out with his annual “United State of Pop” mashup, which features the 25 most popular songs of the year (according to Billboard magazine), and, we have to say, it forms one pretty cohesive jam.

Featuring songs from pop stars like Ke$ha and Katy Perry, this mashup certainly isn’t for everyone (including this humble author), but we have to admire DJ Earworm’s (a.k.a. Jordan Roseman’s) mashup chops.

Check out the video above and let us know: What were your favorite songs of 2010?
