Lady Gaga No Longer Blacklisted in China

For Lady Gaga fans in China, some applause is in order.

Chinese citizens are now legally allowed to listen to the pop star's latest album, ARTPOP, after she was removed from the nation's blacklist for the first time since 2011. But that lift comes with some caveats: The album cover, which features an all-but-naked Gaga, won't appear that way in China. Instead, the cover will show Gaga sporting a pair of black tights, and her waist will be obscured by a larger version of the bright blue ball that appears between her legs on the American album. Chinese Culture Ministry officials have also altered one song title, according to CNN, changing "Sexxx Dreams" to "X Dreams." Read more...

Gaga and Aguilera Shatter Glasses, Feud Rumors in 'The Voice' Duet

Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera gave viewers a surprise duet on The Voice season finale Tuesday, shattering champagne glasses and any remnants of their long-rumored feud with their intimate performance of Gaga's R. Kelly-assisted hit "Do What U Want."

Donning shiny gold getups, the pair traded vocal acrobatics, and at one point, Aguilera caresses Gaga's head before they chug champagne and throw their glasses to the floor as if to make a statement to people who have called them enemies since 2008.

Gaga previously tried to put the feud rumors — which pitted her against Aguilera for their vocal and aesthetic similarities — to bed on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live: "I'm a very big fan of Christina Aguilera. From the very beginning of when my career started there was all this controversy about the two of us, and I always felt that it was very unfair to her." Read more...

Sorry, Katy: Lady Gaga Was Twitter's Longest-Reigning Queen

It isn't easy to hold on to the title of most followed user on Twitter. The crown has been passed between celebrities four times since Ashton Kutcher's famous race with CNN to be the first account with 1 million followers, back in April 2009

Though Katy Perry now wears the crown, Lady Gaga held onto the title longest: she was the most followed Twitter user for two and a half years

The timeline below, created by Statista, shows the most followed user since Ashton Kutcher hit 1 million

Watch All the AMAs Performances: Rihanna, Gaga, Miley, 1D and More

The American Music Awards squeezed in 16 performances on Sunday, some of which kept the Internet talking well into Monday.

Miley Cyrus sang "Wrecking Ball" as a virtual cat lip synced behind her. Lady Gaga and R. Kelly's duet of "Do What U Want" reminded viewers of former President John F. Kennedy's alleged affair involving superstar Marilyn Monroe. TLC reunited with special guest Lil' Mama to perform "Waterfalls." And Jennifer Lopez paid tribute to "Queen of Salsa" Celia Cruz with a fast-paced medley of her hits and tantalizing dance stunts.

Lady Gaga and R. Kelly Spark Instagram Scandal of Presidential Proportions

"Who put these pictures on Instagram?" asks an annoyed President R. Kelly in his and Lady Gaga's White House-themed performance at the American Music Awards on Sunday night. Performing "Do What U Want," the pair sang, acted and got intimate

The act reminded viewers of former President John F. Kennedy's alleged affair involving superstar Marilyn Monroe. At one point in the performance, R. Kelly sings, "You're the Marilyn, I'm the president, and I'd love to hear you sing, girl." The musical sketch at the AMAs took place in the same week as the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination. Jazzy '40s Style Lady Gaga Cover With a Tap Twist

Lady Gaga commanded us all to "Just Dance" way back in 2008, but she wasn't specific about which genre of dance she'd prefer. Did she want us to square dance? Maybe form a conga line?

This '40s themed band finally has an answer to all the confusion with their jazzy spin on the hit song, "Just (Tap) Dance."

The party lyrics still work with the vintage feel and rhythmic dancing. Check out the video and see if it inspires you to add some hoofing to your favorite pop song.

Lady Gaga Releases 'ARTPOP' Album Companion App

"ARTPOP" by Lady Gaga “could mean anything,” as sung in the title track on the album. With the release of Lady Gaga’s third studio album “ARTPOP,” Gaga and her TechHaus team have built an intriguing companion app. The main question is whether the ARTPOP app is more than a gimmicky way to boost album sales.

The "ARTPOP" app is centralized around the idea of “the auras,” which is the community of users within the app. Named after “Aura,” the first track on the album, each user has a personal profile that they develop while using the app. Think of it as an overall presence of your activity, accessed by tapping on the glowing orb at the bottom of the main menu, which will reveal your activity scattered across the screen. The unpredictable artist introduced a new addition to her eccentric wardrobe on Sunday: a flying dress called 'Volantis.' She debuted the dress at a secret location in New York City during an event called artRave. The event included other special unveilings, including new sculptures by artist Jeff Koons

Lady Gaga to Sing in Space — Seriously

Global pop star Lady Gaga will soon be performing among the stars, blasting off into outer space in 2015 on a Virgin Galactic ship

Her unearthly jam session will reportedly coincide with the Zero G Colony tech festival in New Mexico, and she will become the first celebrity musician to sing in space

The out-of-this-world stunt will require some prep work. "She has to do a month of vocal training because of the atmosphere," a source told Us Weekly

Gaga may become the first chart-topper to give a concert in orbit, but it won't be the first tune performed in space. Last year, astronaut Chis Hadfield recorded a song aboard the International Space Station. He also made the first intergalactic music video, when he covered David Bowie's "Space Oddity" in a zero-gravity video (watch, below). Read more...

And thus ends another MTV Video Music Awards. This year's show was no disappointment. We laughed, we cringed, we twerked and we GIFed our hearts out

There were several notable performances including Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and Macklemore. But a rather raunchy performance from Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke almost melted the Internet and an 'N Sync reunion brought down Brooklyn

27 Lady Gaga 'Applause' GIFs That Belong in a Museum

Lady Gaga's artsy "Applause" music video premiered Monday on Good Morning America, and nearly every scene looks as though it should be printed, framed and mounted as art.

Primarily shrouded in black and white with pops of color, the clip shows the 27-year-old pop star rising from a giant top hat, quivering in a birdcage, fluttering with skeleton wings, transforming into a black swan and dancing in bras shaped like seashells.

MTV announced Monday that Gaga will open Sunday's Video Music Awards with a performance of "Applause." The song is the first single from Gaga's fourth studio album, ARTPOP, which is slated to debut Nov. 11 with an app-based multimedia experience. Read more...

These Furby-Inspired Album Covers Will Give You Major Nostalgia

There are many reasons we love the Internet, but mostly it's because no matter how offbeat an idea may be, it has the potential to become a major hit

And today's coolest (read: oddest) Internet idea is Furby Living, a project by Swedish artist William Källback Winter which re-imagines Top 40 album covers with Furbies, the oddly lifelike toys that dominated the late 90s and early 2000s. Winter creates each album cover through a mix of photography and Photoshop, spending two to five hours on each

Winter owns four Furbies himself. "I actually pick the Furby depending on the expression I need," he told Yahoo!. "The original 1998 Furby is great for more wide-open eyes. The 2005 Furby has bottom eyelids, which is great for squinting eyes, as well as a more expressive mouth. The 2012 Furby doesn't have eyelashes, which works better for guys — even though I've only used it for Justin Bieber that way. I usually just try posing them for a bit and see which Furby looks most like the artist I'm recreating!" Read more...

Lady Gaga Debuts Haunting ‘Fame’ Perfume Commercial

Lady Gaga has dropped the official commercial for her new perfume 'Fame.'

In the video, Gaga emerges from a vat of black goo, most likely representative of the perfume, which has been described as “black like the soul of fame, but invisible once airborn.” The goo later pours from Gaga's lips, but we doubt that means the fragrance is edible.

She then takes to laying on a wispy cloud as several scantily-clad men climb over her naked body. Gaga promoted her perfume earlier this summer using the revealing scene in a print ad.

Still, the artistic quality of the ad can't be denied. Directed by Steven Klein, each frame…

Eminem Reaches 60 Million Facebook Likes Before Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga may rule Twitter, but Eminem is the top star when it comes to Facebook Likes.

The rap star's Facebook page reached 60 million Likes on Wednesday -- the most for any living person, and beating out mega-stars Rihanna and Lady Gaga, who each have their own massive social media followings.

On Eminem's Facebook page he typically posts links to YouTube videos of his music and interviews, with little or no comment. Despite the fact that writing in first person on your Facebook account is the best way to get more shares and Likes, it certainly doesn't hurt to be uber-famous.

According to AppData, Eminem is close to nabbing more than 26,000 Likes each day, with Rihanna not far b…

Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’ Turns 1 on a Friday: What’s Your Favorite Memory?

A year ago, Rebecca Black’s unforgettable viral tune “Friday” first appeared on YouTube. Since then, the massively autotuned “Friday” music video has reached millions upon millions of eyes, spawned countless parodies and caught the attention of many celebrities.

To honor the jam, which eventually became Know Your Meme‘s top meme of 2011, we’re looking back at the high-profile musicians and famous tech personalities who have supported Black, covered the song or parodied it for its comedic glory (see list below).

Although released on Feb. 10, 2011, “Friday” exploded onto our radars in March as the song started attracting Justin Bieber-esque YouTube fame and much ridicule for its simple lyrics, low-budget music video and apparent autotuned vocals. Dust began to settle on the song as 2011 came to a close. However, in November, it returned for a reprieve in Kohl’s Black Friday ad.

Black acknowledged the 1-year anniversary Friday night in this tweet:

What has been your favorite “Friday” memory — whether that be an experience hearing it offline or a moment discovering a funny online spoof? I remember jamming out to it on a Saturday during a vacation in Phoenix and then again poolside the following day. Whomp.

Lady Gaga’s New Social Network Resembles Pinterest, Reddit [PICS]

Pop megastar Lady Gaga has pierced her powerful, digitally-willing paws deeper into the online world with the closed beta launch of her new social network.

LittleMonsters.com — the first product created by startup Backplane — gives Gaga’s fans an outlet to create or share Gaga-related content, interact with fellow “Little Monsters” and publicly show whether they like what other users post. You can request an invite to join the network now.

With a look like Pinterest and an popularity-vote feel like Reddit, the Little Monsters website appears to be latching on to what’s hot on the web right now: sharing visuals and rating content.

Backplane CEO and co-founder Matt Michelsen told Mashable that this site and future Blackplane projects have one core mission: “Unite people around interests, affinities and movements.”

To help complete that goal of creating communities (they don’t necessarily have to be social ones), Backplane will look to its expanding staff and four co-founders, several of which have tech backgrounds working at Google, Palantir Technologies and Yahoo. The other three co-founders are Lady Gaga’s manager Troy Carter, former Google designer Joey Primiani and former Palantir director of operations Alex Moore.

The social network, which has been around in beta for four weeks now, has doled out roughly 10,000 codes, including one to Mashable. Check out our test-run in the gallery above for specifics.

“Backplane is about bringing together communities and Gaga’s community just so happens to be the community we’re using … We think we can really change the world, but we’re fearful that we’re going to be pigeon-holed.”

“Backplane is about bringing together communities and Gaga’s community just so happens to be the community we’re using to learn about proper functionality,” Michelsen says. “We think we can really change the world.”

Backplane, partially funded by Gaga, plans to launch Little Monsters out of beta and unleash more sites in 2012. Once more sites are unveiled, Backplane intends to release a dashboard on its site this summer that would combine the communities.

Gaga’s strong social media presence should work into Backplane’s advantage and help build a large user base — let alone attention to the startup — for Little Monsters. Gaga joined Google+ in January and has already accumulated more than 330,000 followers. That’s in addition to her almost 19 million Twitter followers, which is the most for any user on the microblogging service, and 47 million Facebook fans.

Her involvement with two Google initiatives in 2011 is also a testament to her digital presence: a Chrome commercial and Google Goes Gaga, a sit-down session with Google executive Marissa Mayer to promote Google Moderator. At that time, Mayer said, “At Google, we’ve seen Gaga build her career by embracing technology … as well as constantly innovating for her fans.”

Additionally, Gaga was the first artist to reach 1 billion views on YouTube; she beat President Barack Obama to 10 million Facebook fans; Vogue released a Lady Gaga-focused iPad-only magazine app; and she became creative director at Polaroid.

BONUS: How Lady Gaga Used the Web to Propel Her Last Album

In the months leading up to the May 23, 2011, Born This Way album release — and even now — Gaga has paved a path for stars and brands to get inventive with the ways they use digital and social media to promote themselves and connect with fans. Gaga is no stranger to success on the web. The promotional juggernaut in 2011 ramped up her all-encompassing web presence, fostering partnerships with Zynga for the FarmVille-inspired GagaVille, Starbucks for a massive scavenger hunt, VEVO for exclusive premieres, HBO for a concert special, Rdio for free lifetime subscriptions, iTunes for a promotional countdown, Best Buy and Livestream for an album signing and Gilt Groupe and Amazon Cloud Player for deals.

Below, we’ve compiled a huge swathe of the digital and social media initiatives behind Gaga’s Born This Way, which is now nominated for three Grammy awards, including her third-straight nod for Album of the Year.

Zynga's GagaVille

On May 17, Zynga launched the Farmville-style GagaVille, which garnered much ridicule from Gaga haters and laughs from even the most devoted Little Monsters.

Jokes aside, Lady Gaga like other big brands this year found a way to leverage the enormous social gaming population, which is expected to reach 68.7 million players by the end of 2012.

Gamers were able to unlock and stream unreleased tracks from Born This Way and bonus remixes. The game incorporated Gaga's style and personality with users having access to crystals, unicorns and sheep on motorcycles. The GagaVille campaign also incorporated Zynga game cards (buy a $25 card and receive the Born This Way album and bonus tracks for free); Words With Friends (use a Gaga word of the day and be entered for concert tickets); and RewardVille (win virtual goods to use in other Zynga games).
