Android Makes Up Nearly 80% of Global Smartphone Shipments

There is no end in sight to the Android versus iPhone debate, but while we can all argue over the pros and cons of each, the numbers don't lie: Android is still the most popular operating system in the world.

According to data from market intelligence firm IDC, Android's dominance in the mobile market is still growing. In 2013, Android devices comprised 78.6% of global smartphone unit shipments — up from 69% in 2012. Compare that to iOS, which made up only 15.2% of smartphone shipments in 2013 (down from 18.7% in 2012).

Two-Thirds of U.S. Consumers Own Smartphones

Two-thirds of U.S. consumers currently own smartphones, up significantly from 44% in 2011, according to a new report. In fact, nationwide smartphone popularity is so high, it's now more common than gaming consoles (46%) and digital cable (54%).

The findings come from Nielsen's Digital Consumer Report released this week, highlighting the country's growth in tech adoption in the past few years

The report also revealed that the average person owns about four mobile devices and spends 60 hours a week consuming content on them. Half of smartphone users access social networks each day and 84% use a mobile device while watching TV. Smartphone owners spend 86% of their time using apps, compared to 14% of their time accessing the mobile web. Read more...

Pete Wentz on Fall Out Boy's 'Flappy Bird' Homage

Fall Out Bird, the Fall Out Boy-themed version of Flappy Bird launched on Android Wednesday, much to the delight of Fall Out Boy and Flappy Bird fans everywhere.

Flappy Bird was removed from Apple's App Store and Google Play earlier this week when its creator announced he could no longer cope with the attention his game's sudden popularity brought on. Two days later, Fall Out Boy announced that it would release their own version of the hit game

"Every once in a awhile I feel like a game comes along, and it's a cultural touchstone," Pete Wentz, Fall Out Boy's bassist, said in an interview with Mashable. "This game is made out of love for the original." Read more...

Apple to Release iOS 7.1 in March and Other News You Need to Know
